4 Day Special Cultural Tour to Engaruka/Oldonyo Lengai is the only program that enable guests to witness how Tanzania most preserved culture, norms and values are practiced by Masai tribe in Engaruka.

Safari Details

Day 1: Transfer to Arusha

Transfer from airport to Arusha for dinner and overnight at the booked hotel plus safari briefing.

Day 2: Walk to Watch Ancient Life at Engaruka.

We will see the remnants of the ruined city of Engaruka. The guide will help you to identify ancient graves, house walls, irrigation canals and terraces, and explain the various theories about the rise and fall of the farming community. Enjoy enroute, the colorful birds and butterflies, remnants of the German era, and also visit an “orpul” or Masai slaughter-house.

Engaruka Farming Tour.

From the remains walks to the village of Engaruka. Enroute, explore several farms and learn about various local farming and irrigation methods. Our guide will pitch light on the tribal background of the village. On the way back, we will visit the local market located in the shade of African tulip tree and a huge mkuyu (sycamore) tree.

Day 2: Rift Valley and Kerimasi Mountain Climb.

From the ruined city, narrow footpaths wind up the Rift Valley escarpment. Climb the escarpment guided by a Maasai warrior, who will help you mark many colorful birds and explain to you trees and plants that the Masai people use for food and medicines.

Kerimasi mountain climb.

North of Engaruka is the green Kerimasi mountain. The ascend takes 3 to 4 hours from the foot to the summit. From the top, you see impressive views of Oldoinyo Lengai, Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro highlands and the mountains of Kitumbeine and Gelai. The descent takes about two hours.

Day: 3 -4 Climbing to Oldoinyo Lengai.

Climb Oldoinyo Lengai or “the mountain of God” in Masai language. On the third day of your safari you will climb Kerimasi mountain and descend on the north side to camp at the foot of Oldoinyo Lengai, the only active volcano in Tanzania.

On the next day in the morning, you will start the 4-5 hour climb to the top, where you can even enter the crater to watch the volcanic activity is found. The descent takes about 2 ½ hours.

Back to Arusha via Mto wa Mbu.

After the descent from Oldoinyo Lengai, we will drive back to Arusha via Mto Wa Mbu. Late evening fly back home or fly to Zanzibar.
